Preparing for Your 72-Hour Basic Survival Field Course
Booked your Basic Survival field course? Here is how to arrive ready, so you spend your 72 hours learning instead of struggling.
What to expect
A walk-in primitive camp near Edmundston, New Brunswick.
A 2–4 km walk-in carrying about 10 kg of personal gear, plus natural materials you collect.
Our Educate, Demonstrate, Imitate method, at a pace set by the students.
You build your own shelter, make fire, collect and purify water and sleep outdoors.
What to bring
Your own food for 72 hours.
Your 10 C's survival kit.
Layered clothing, with no cotton base layer.
Sturdy, broken-in boots and rain gear.
A sleeping system rated for the season.
Any personal medication.
The full gear list is on our Information page.
Get your legs ready
For four weeks before the course, walk 3–5 km with a 10 kg pack at least twice a week. Wear the boots you will bring: blisters are one of the most avoidable problems in the field.
Student tip: take the online Basic Survival course before you come. You arrive with the theory done, so more of your field time goes into practice.
